To Party or Not to Party?

I have the day off today so of course that means I spent my morning drinking coffee and reading all of your blogs.  I love this time of reflection.  Looking back and looking forward, simultaneously.  It is kind of exhilarating in a way.  It is also shocking every year that 365 days have passed by that quickly.  It never fails, people always say "where did the year go?"

If our year was full and memorable we can look back with satisfaction and know we didn't let it slip through our fingers.  I can look back and see that I started a brand new life here in San Diego.  I left Chicago and had a fresh, healthy start on the west coast.  It was such a good decision and I have not regretted it for a second.  I have grown as a person and as a runner.  I have learned a lot about myself and my oh my, do I have a lot more to figure out.

So, tonight is the night we celebrate one year and bring in the next.  How are all of you celebrating?

For years I have wanted to attend a late night yoga session with an extended savasana for reflection.  I have wanted to bring in the new year on my mat, at peace, surrounded by positive people in a room filled with intention.  I have yet to do so.  Tonight might be my night.

We may do the traditional NYE and go to Lei Lounge, one of our favorite spots with an outdoor dance floor and entertainment.  I think these parties are often overrated.  The bars are overcrowded, drinks are overpriced, cabs are scarce and chaos always seems to ensue as the bars close.  My expectations are never met and I always think about how peaceful that midnight yoga would have been.  I have drunkenly brought in many a new year with raucous cheers and crazy dancing.  Maybe this one will be different.  Maybe, I won't wear the 2011 crown this year and will forgo the noisemakers and champagne.    How about you?
To Party
or
Not To Party...
That is the question...

I hope ALL OF YOU out there have a fabulous night.  Be safe and of course, have fun!

May the new year bring you health, happiness and many joyous miles.

  1. If I don't have a drink tonight it will be the first in my adult life (aside from those years containing a pregnancy) and that is really what I am planning.

On the one hand, I want to celebrate with a glass (or two) of wine or champagne. On the other hand, I want to wake up tomorrow completely refeshed and feeling vibrant and ready to take on the world...or at least take on a magnificent hike with the pooch.

I think I'm leaning towards a movie with the husband and a quiet night in. The kids will be gone so maybe I can actually take some time with my thoughts as I feflect on this last year and look forward to the next.

I LOVE your idea of a midnight yoga. It sounds like a wonderful way to bring in the new year.

Me? Light celebration with friends and my family- peaceful and laid back. That's how I prefer it.

  3. I'm having a "party" with my husband and three of our closest friends. We're cooking a fancy dinner, then drinking champagne and playing Mario Kart until the wee hours of the morning.

  4. Yoga to start the new year sounds wonderful. We always have a quiet New Years with the kids - I love the feeling of waking up fresh on New Year's Day, rather than having raging hangover...

  5. I'm with you today. Though I'm drinking a glass of wine while reading blogs...hey, it's 4:30 p.m. EST and it's NYE! ;)

About five years ago my husband and I were Bikram Yoga freaks. 5 - 7 classes a week. The studio held a special NYE class that was timed so that we would hold a two-minute camel pose that would end when the clock struck midnight. It. Was. Awesome. We showered up and then all set on the floor in the hot studio enjoying strawberries and champagne. (There may or may not have been a conga line and some limbo....which is demoralizing around yogis when you're a stiff runner....I digress)

This year? Pajamas, homemade sushi and a bottle of Prosseco around 10pm because I will never see midnight.

Whatever you decide to do, enjoy it! And Happy New Year!

  6. As my new BFF you are OF COURSE adopted. No questions asked. I'll have a harmonica ready for you for our next performance. On one condition...can I please come to new years yoga with you!?!?!
I am not a big fan of new years because I think it's super overrated. It's like you said...high expectations that are never met. I like your idea better!!!

  7. Ooooo. I love the idea of a late nate Yoga session! but, dancing sure does bring in the New Year!

Like Julie stated above, I will reach for a drink, but want to wake up tomorrow feeling ready for 365 days in 2011!

I will tune in tomorrow to see what you decide!

  10. So, what did you choose?

Mick and I had a fairly quiet NYE. We went out to eat, but I didn't drink as I had an early-morning run this morning. We came home well before midnight. It has been a really nice weekend so far! Good way to start 2011.

  11. Wow, talk about two things that could not be more different. I now wonder what you chose. I went to my friend's house in Oceanside for a mellow party - one beer for me :-) BTW, I've known my friend since Kindergarten - 40 years!

  12. A midnight yoga session sounds so much better than the tiring party I had, so I might try that next year. Happy and healthy 2011 to you!

  13. I love the idea of Midnight Yoga! Seeing as I have never done yoga it would be quite an interesting way to start the year. I think this will be a question that I will ask myself for this entire year. To Party or Not to Party? Last year was full of drinks, clubs and dancing; however, this year I think I'm going to take the time to relax, read more books, take more walks...one thing I realized last year is that the party isn't going anywhere but my time to relax and just enjoy life is far and in between. So this year is going to be committed to enjoying life and ALL the many aspects that it brings!

  14. My comment is after the fact now, but I say party especially if you don't have kids or have a New Years Day race. Me, I've got both, so in bed watching the ball drop.
