I Love You, Bart Yasso!

In case you're wondering what I ended up doing on New Year's Eve (yoga or party) it was more of the latter.  All the spots filled up for yoga so I missed my chance.  Apparently I wasn't the only one interested in some down-dog on NYE.  Instead we went to Bombay.  Not literally, but I wish.  We gorged ourselves on incredible Indian fare at a fantastic spot in Hillcrest.

After a deliciously filling dinner and a bottle of wine we went to a few parties in the neighborhood.  Classy, cozy and fabulous - exactly what we had in mind.  Eventually we rounded out the night at a bar where we danced for the length of approximately 3 songs.  This part of the night was not so classy.  It was fun to jump around on the packed dance floor but suddenly we felt old.  We were both sleepy and ready for bed.
I was really digging that wine, apparently.
Ang always closes one eye when she smiles.
She can't help it & I think it's cute ;-)

And guess where we went for lunch the next day?  Right back to Bombay to enjoy their buffet.  Have I mentioned that I have an incredibly addictive personality?  When I find something I love, I suddenly want it every single day.  One month I was addicted to frozen yogurt (pre-vegan days), cinnamon-raisin peanut butter, pretzel bagels, roasted pine nut cous-cous, and so on.  Welcome to my life.  So we started 2011 off right with a massive assortment of Indian foods to get my fix.  This one might require some rehab.

My Life On The Run - Bart Yasso

I made my way through 4 1/2 books in the last 2 weekends.  Yes, I have a life!  I also enjoy reading.  It may actually fall into that addictive personality thing I mentioned earlier.  With extra time off I have conquered much of my 'To Read' stack.  In just one night I completed My Life On The Run by Bart Yasso.  Love him or hate him, it's a fascinating read.  I personally think he is a fantastic guy.  I love his zest for life and his sense of adventure.  His motto is one that I personally believe strongly in:

"Live simply so others can simply live."

This concept is most applicaple in reference to vegetarianism.  For example, according to the U.N., it takes up to 16 pounds of grain to produce just 1 pound of meat, and even fish on fish farms must be fed up to 5 pounds of wild-caught fish to produce 1 pound of farmed fish flesh.  It takes more than 11 times as much fossil fuel to make one calorie from animal protein as it does to make one calorie from plant protein.  Did I mention Bart Yasso has been a vegetarian since 1982?  More reason to love him.

I couldn't put this book down.  Since I haven't been able to travel much internationally this past year, I was able to live vicariously through his stories.  He writes about running in India, Africa, Antarctica and cycling across the United States.  His battle with Lyme Disease serves as an inspiration and his not-so-perfect childhood is easily relateable.  His hunger and love for running landed him a lifelong career in running.  There are few people that can say that.  Jenny Hadfield is another one of those people (I wrote about running with her here).  I would love to make a career out of the very thing I love most.

I have run on 3 continents (Europe, Africa and of course, North America) and am inspired to run on every single one before I die.  Hopefully, that isn't any time soon.

I am even contemplating using one of Bart's marathon training plans for Chicago this year.  I like his plans far more than the current one I am using from Runner's World and prefer the higher mileage.

Speaking of My Life On The Run, here are some pictures from My Weekend On The Run.

Mother nature kicked my butt this weekend.  End of story.

I only have one 18 miler and a 20 miler left on the books before Surf City.  I can't believe my "big day" is just around the corner.  February 6th will be here before I know it.

  1. Yes! I love Bart Yasso and also flew through his book. So inspiring! I met him a little over a year ago at the Philadelphia marathon...I was so excited. Sounds like a fun new years. Who would have thought yoga on new years would be so popular?!

  2. Keri- Lucky you! I would love to meet him. Maybe I'll meet him at the next big race I do.

  3. Yasso is an amazing soul, for sure. I haven't read his book, but Runners World did a pretty in-depth article on him a few months ago. After reading that, I'd love to read more.

And in response to your comment, "My goal for 2011: Meet YOU at a race somewhere!" I just have to say that I fully support this goal! :)

  4. I am totally addictive about foods, too!! I will eat something over and over and then never want it again because I just ate it for 16 meals straight.

    Happy new year!

  5. Love the pictures, makes me feel closer. It's funny you feel old, maybe your muscles just need a vacation. I love your life and i'm happy that you're happy in it.

ps~ i'm having lots of trouble posting. it takes forever and somtimes it disappears. what the heck~~

  6. What a great weekend to bring in the new year! I miss the days when I could read book after book after book. The kids fried my brain and took all my free time. There's hope I hear...some day...they will turn into teenagers and give me some free time :-)
...probably more than I want, though.

When I was a kid I ate a fried egg sandwich twice a day every day for a full year.

  7. Ooo! I will have to check this book out! Thanks for the rec! 18 and 20 miles--you got this!!

You and Angela are too adorable and SUPER photgenic!! I love her necklace btw!

Glad you two had a fun NYE--maybe yoga next year?!!

  8. Thanks for the recommendation! I was just feeling nostalgic over Born to Run the other day and began hunting for another good book about running. I couldn't seem to make up my mind though so this post is quite timely!

  9. I love Bart as well, and his book has been on my list for a while. I'll have to pick it up soon I guess! Good luck on Surf City, I'm sure it will be incredible - after all, there's nothing like your first marathon : )

  10. I've heard good things about this're the third one today to say something about it so I guess that means I should look into it. Good luck on your big day! Love your pictures.

  11. I hate mother nature. I meant to show up on your doorstep, but I figured I'd come pack my things up first. We'll be neighbors soon enough :)
I am like laughing as i read your post because i swear we are the SAME. I totally have an addictive personality, especially when it comes to food. I have like my favorite three restaurants where I get the SAME things, and I wouldn't mind doing that over and over.

I can't believe your race is so soon!! good luck. You'll be awesome. I hope the weather gets better for your training :( I'll send some good vibes your way. I'm also super impressed at your superhuman reading skills. Teach me?

  12. Nothing better than reading some good books - I'll have to look into this one. Happy 2011 and you are getting close with the training!!!

  13. I will definitely have to check out this book. I'm glad you had a fun NYE. I'm jealous that you have good Indian close to where you live. We have to drive an hour!

  14. Sometimes you just have to eat Indian food! The Yasso book is really cool, he's a very complex person, to say the least.

  15. I loved that book too. I have been reading on my new iPad (Kindle) and for some reason it makes me read much faster.

  16. I completely have an addictive personality too...I can eat the same 3 meals every day without complaint!

I was thinking about you on my way in to work today and wondering when Surf City was...just a month away! You're totally going to rock it!

  17. I need to read his book. I met him a few months ago at the Mt. Lemmon Marathon. He's a very cool guy!

  18. Sounds like the perfect weekend and I NEED to read that book!! You know I am an addict....I get the same exact thing over and over again!! Thank you so so much for the sweet comment you left me! MADE MY DAY!! So when I am in Cali for the summer (San Clamente) can we please go on a blogger date?!?!

  19. Hoping to get out to HB 2/6 and cheer on all you runners since I won't be running myself. I'll make sure to yell extra loud if I see you :)

  20. Funny, I took my kid down to Urban Outfitters on 5th Ave just last week and parked in that lot in the same mall.

Surf City U.S.A.! We are gonna do S.D. proud, eh?

  21. Yeah I totally put that Dean picture back up just for you!!!!!!!!

  22. After the Runner's World article, I've wanted to read that book, just haven't gotten around to it yet. You are so cute! It's great that you only have 2 long runs left before the big day! Pretty exciting! And I'm so intrigued by what vegetarians and vegans eat. I know that sounds stupid. I don't mean for it to. I'm excited to follow along your journey.

  23. oh ya gotta have wine to enjoy the night, hehe! Glad it was a good one. Never heard of that book, definitely need to go check it out.

  24. I need to look into this book! I just got Thrive, can't wait to dive into it.
