The Chicago Bandwagon, Jump On!

E-Mail from last night:

Dear Kate,

Congratulations! You are now registered for Bank of America Chicago Marathon.

It's official!  I registered for Chicago the day after my first marathon.  Way to jump the gun, eh?  Actually, Angela registered the both of us and then we suckered Nick into registering.  Remember Nick, my favorite Starbucks barista (or according to Pam, "Baristo") whose time I wanted to beat.  Well, I did and now he wants to beat mine.  That means we will battle it out in my home city of Chicago.  Feel free to take bets (as long as you are betting on Team Kate).

Who else will be there!?  If you're even considering it, register now before it sells out!  I would love to meet you!

If you haven't run the Chicago Marathon, you should before you die.  The crowd support is incredible throughout every single mile.  The course weaves through various Chicago neighborhoods allowing you to take a tour of the city that wouldn't be possible any other day of the year.  It's flat and fast and most importantly, FUN!  I only know this because I jumped in as a bandit and ran the second half with Ang in 2009.  It was the most fun I think I ever had.  I am pretty sure I smiled the entire 13.1 miles.

When it comes to marathons, it is true what they say, "It's all about the journey."  Race day goes by in the blink of an eye.  We must enjoy those months leading up to the big day.  We should embrace those long runs on the weekends that keep us from doing laundry and everything else we SHOULD be doing.  We should savor those Friday or Saturday nights staying in so we can wake up at the crack of dawn the next day.  There are the ice baths, sore muscles and painful blisters to love (or at least endure).  If we don't, what is the point of all this?

I loved my training.  I looked forward to the long runs and was proud of the increasing number of miles I was running.  Like an old lady, I loved my Saturday nights at home watching documentaries and eating popcorn with Ang.  Two (nerdy) peas in a pod.  I felt stronger than ever and that feeling is priceless.

I can already see how marathons are addicting.  You finish.  You feel glorious.  Now you have a time to beat.  At least that's how my brain works.  Am I alone here?

As for right now, my feet are still healing from the bashing they took.  My evening looked a little something like this...

Jealous? My tootsies all wrapped in sterile gauze.  I need a tan.  Today I am wearing a white sock and only one shoe.  Not so sexy but oh, so necessary.

I received a BOX from Brooks today!  I will blog about it tomorrow, so check back in!  Very exciting stuff!

...and I just have to say, I LOVE MY READERS!! You are all so amazing.  Your comments bring so many smiles to my face.  My cheeks are actually starting to hurt.

  1. I love training, I think I love it more than the race itself since crowds of people tend to leave me feeling a little overwhelmed.

There is something so special about waking up to run before work and seeing people stare at you like what is she doing? I love those looks every time as I just run on by.

Good luck with all your training for Chicago!

  2. I'm excited to see what Brooks sent you!

Your poor feet. I think we need a picture update on how they're doing.

  3. Yay congrat's on registering!!! I still can't wrap my head around a race over 4 miles so kudos to ya! Hopefully I'll get there one day :)

  4. Oweeee on the feet! Is that Cocoa Marble Fudge Rice Dream I spy? That will help the recovery! You deserve many, many pints!

  5. I get it. The Rice Dreams carton serves as a spacer between your feet, keeping them roughly at 90 degrees. Smart.

  6. Hey Kate,
myself and my two girl pals are doing Chicago. We are sooooo excited. We may have to use you for info since this is your town:) Maybe we can meet up:) How are you feeling post marathon?

  7. Ooo!! What's in the package?! Shoes that don't make your toes fall off! I hope so!! :)

I am so tempted by Chicago--It is listed as one of the top mary's to run!!

I love your thought process on the addiction of racing! You did so amazing and that was ONLY your very first mary! You are a rock star!!

  8. Chicago was in the cards for me this year, but I am super stoked to run a home town race instead. :) It's nice to be able to train on the marathon course I'll be running in September every day!

  9. I'm with you on loving the training. Didn't realize how much I'd miss it by skipping a Spring marathon. Feeling a bit rudderless as I try to get healthy. I'm viewing that feeling of something missing as a good thing - no burnout.

Is there a subliminal suggestion that Rice Dream is good for recovery? I'll try anything if it means healing.

  10. I'm excited for your marathon!
I'm almost as excited for you to open that brown box...
I still say "AKKK" at your feet but I'm sure they are on the mend.

  12. I did a little 12 mile tempo run today. Kidding! I'm still walking like Frankenstein. Chicago is tempting. I have relatives there. I hear that the GPS gets funky. I might implode if my Garmin doesn't work.

  16. You have an awesome way of thinking!! I'm training for #2 and knew that I wanted to run another as soon as I crossed the finish line of my first (and my first wasn't the best experience and would probably make most people not want to run antoher haha)
I can't wait to see what's in the box!!!

  21. This sounds so tempting! I think my husband might kill me if I sign on to train for another marathon...so much work for him but this sounds so fun. I don't know that my hubby and I would be able to go together so maybe if I could weasel some friends into going with me and sharing a hotel.

  28. YAY!!! I'm so excited for you to run Chicago. I would but I'm running the Detroit marathon the following weekend (have I mentioned this at all?).

You may need a tan, but do I detect that you have a pedicure? Do you worry about pedicures while training? I am always hesitant because I'm prone to nasty things happening to my toes while training and it seems a waste of money and I'm scared they will do something during the pedicure that will injure my foot. But I LOVE pedicures, they are tied with massages as my fav indulgence.

I am beginning to really relish the journey. Thank you for stating that so eloquently friend!
