My Fire Is Back!

In my last post I wrote about burn out and listening to my body.  I could feel it coming on.  Running was starting to feel like a chore and I was no longer looking forward to runs that exceeded 8 or so miles.   I took a break for 3 whole days and spent some time cross training.  3 days may seem menial, but trust me, it made a significant difference.

This week was the emancipation from burn-out I was hoping for.  I gave myself the freedom to skip my runs and to completely disregard my training schedule.  Once I allowed myself that freedom it was as though a weight was lifted.  I gave myself permission to run for fun, or not at all.

I didn't even run with the running group I lead.  I just gave orders.
I even had the audacity to have Nya carry me to run group as part of her workout.  Very Jillian of me.  :)

Last night, I put my running shoes on and attempted this whole running thing again.  This time, my body did not feel heavy.  I felt light and smooth, like I usually do.  The fresh air in combination with my deep breaths cleansed my stale lungs.  I didn't have a mileage goal in mind and left my watch at home. Pace was not a thought.

I wound up running 7 miles at what felt like a swift pace.

3 days off and a change in attitude can have quite an impact on training.  Once I adjusted my outlook on training, it all came back together as it should.  Even the pain in my foot has dissipated.  I think it may have been psychosomatic, caused by the stress I was putting on myself to train hard.

Running felt invigorating last night, just like old times.  I am happy to say that I think I have my fire back.  My passion and love affair with running are in tact once again.  Worry no more!  I will be running the Skyline to Sea Trail Marathon as planned.  My finish time will be significantly slower than Surf City and I am okay with that.  Like I mentioned before, this is an adventure run -- not a race.

Sometimes, I think we need to let go of our goals.  Yes, they are important and they give us something to work toward.  However, if they're taking the fun out of something that is meant to be enjoyable, we might need to kick them to the curb, at least temporarily.  Doing so has certainly worked wonders for me.   Just consider it if you're starting to feel burnt out.  Allow yourself freedom and flexibility.  The rigidity of a training schedule can sometimes cause more harm than good.

Love yourself & give yourself a break from time to time.

  9. Glad you got your mojo back. I've not taken a break from running that wasn't injury-forced in a long time. Not currently feeling burned-out, but worth a try in the future if it feels forced.

Well written sentiment with regards to occasionally letting go of goals. Not even Charlie Sheen could have said it better.

  11. I'm so glad you're feeling that fire again! I think so you're right that we need to let go sometimes to preserve our sanity! And yes, you need a dog of your own!

  12. Glad you got your passion back! I know what you mean, i felt burnt out a few weeks back so i skipped a run and cross trained in stead, then still felt the need to switch it up so i hit the treadmill instead of the road, and now i'm back to my usual self!

Yes, you need a dog. Or two. Take it from a woman who has six (including two I regularly run with). You need a dog.

  18. I'm happy you got your fire back! I am contemplating running with my running partner in my next race so I can ENJOY it instead of focusing on time. I have started to dread races, and I used to enjoy them. I guess we all go through phases. Have a great weekend!

  21. hey-oooh! Way to bring it back! Some real valuable lessons in there for other runners too. I totally believe 3 days can make a difference.

The dog hug is precious. I wish I was brave enough to tackle stranger's dogs, but I feel like they get annoyed by how much they have to stop for young women to coo and pet...so I sadly go on my way

  22. I so needed to read this post Kate. Both for you and selfishly for me. I have been inconsistent in hitting my goal times with yesterday's run being passed off as a FAIL! Thank you for showing us it okay to break-up with running for a few days!

You are so Jillian--but way more beautiful!!

Is that a Bernese Mountain Dog you are cuddling with?!! SO ADORABLE!!! Big teddy bears!

  25. Taking a break can make such a difference! I'm glad you're excited for the trail run again, it will definitely be an adventure :)

  26. You are so right. If it stops being fun, ditch it for a bit. It will come back if you give yourself time to rest and love it again.

As for the dog...you guys need to get a room.

  27. I'm sure a short break will be good for anyone. Luckily I've never needed one myself. Stranger's dogs always come and cuddle with me. For some reason all animals follow me or come to meet me.

  28. You know I love that you are redefining your goals for this trail marathon. It's like I'm rubbing of on you and you're rubbing off on me....see I even slept in until 7 on a Saturday!

  29. Hahaha girl I love that you had someone carry you to running group:) I agree, taking time off is one of the most kind things you can do for your body, and I have taken off a good week from running. I can't wait to get back to it!:) Slash you are adorable, I would cuddle with a lonely dog too, it's fine:)

  33. glad you're back to liking running again! I would still be a little careful the next few weeks with training, maybe just scale it back a bit, so that you don't jump full blast back into training. But glad you feel the desire again!
