A Pinch of Fat Goes a Long Way

Hi, everyone! I know I have been a terrible blogger and have been missing from the blogosphere.  Let’s see what has happened since the last time I blogged:

I turned 25.
I moved into a new apartment.

We adopted a new kitty, Meowsers, and I am madly in love with her.

Ang and I joined a Ragnar Relay team--San Francisco to Napa. Is anyone else doing this in September?

We started to plan a yoga/surf trip to Costa Rica over the holidays in December.

I started the injections for my egg donation. FINALLY!

Say Hello to Meowsers

I am finally grateful for that little layer of fat on my belly.  Pinch it & stick it.
In 2 weeks, a lovely Aussie couple will hopefully be pregnant!

Life has been a beautiful balance of work and relaxation.  My job has brought me a lot of satisfaction already which is key to happiness, in my opinion.  On my time off I have been absorbed in one book or another, enjoying time at home.  Angela gave me private yoga sessions with my favorite instructor, Zoe, for my birthday.  Together we have been practicing with her at her home, overlooking the ocean.  This has brought us closer and has also been a great learning experience. I have already begun to deepen my practice in such a short time. Zoe is truly an incredible gift to the both of us.  She is one of those rare people that are so full of light and love that you feel honored to be in their presence.  I feel complete gratitude for every practice I have with her.  I wish our sessions would never end.

Surprisingly, my runs have been feeling great! I feel light on my feet and quick.  I will start training for the Chicago Marathon next month, so right now my runs are what I like to call “freestyle”.  We have 3 other friends that will be training for marathons at the same time as us, which equates to mutual pig out sessions.  I can’t wait for the big dinners before a 20 or 22 miler.  I feel at my prime during marathon training. Completing an 18 or 20 mile training run is extremely empowering.  As much as I don’t miss devoting most of my time to running, I do miss the physical benefits of running nearly 50 miles/week.

My goal for this training cycle is to stay balanced.  Last time, running took over.  This is probably normal, but I want to find another way.  Yoga needs to have a permanent place in my life.  Last time, unfortunately, it was booted from my schedule.  I don’t want to give up my alone time spent reading and relaxing either.  This has been extremely mentally beneficial for me.  I feel far more sane than usual.

Are you able to train for a marathon, work a full-time job and still manage to fit in everything else?
If so, I’d love some suggestions on how to do it all.

  4. I was just thinking about you this morning wondering if you were retiring from the blogging world, it's nice to hear that you're alive and well!

I have been struggling with balance in my life lately, trying to do everything. I wish I had advice to offer, but I suck at balance and need some advice myself. So if you find any great tips, do share!

I can't believe that marathon season is upon us, yikes I haven't even begun to prepare and plan!

  5. Yay yay! You and I are BOTH BACK, BOTH moved, and BOTH mary training very soon. Good grief! I'm excited for your egg donations, and I'm really interested in doing it myself. :)

I know the feeling of trying to juggle everything with mary training. I ran Chicago a couple of years ago, and had trained for it with a full-time job, full-time school, boyfriend issues, and food issues. It was uhm...some year. Lol

  6. The balancing act is so hard! I feel like I have absolutely no life when I am marathon training. I don't go out on weekends because I have to be up early for runs... I also feel like I often neglect certain people in my life. I spend less time with people I care about because I am out running, strength training, or stretching. I really have to work on my time management because it sure doesn't seem fair!

I think it's really awesome that you are donating! You are going to make some people very happy :)

  7. Aweee love I am so glad you are back!!! I took a hiatus too. I can't believe you are doing something so selfless, that is absolutely amazing that you are doing something so kind for a couple!

Balancing is SO hard. What I have learned is that I REALLY need to concentrate on not procrastinating haha:)

  9. Welcome back! We've missed you.

So much great stuff going on for you. Love the personal yoga overlooking the surf. Awesome. I have fallen in love with yoga this year too.

And I'm doing a Ragnar in September too! Mine is in Maryland with all my great running pals. I am SO excited about it!!

  14. I'm going to start training for my first marathon this November...so we'll see how the balancing goes.
But I only work three days a week and have lots of freetime, so it shouldn't be too bad?

  15. 25!? so young...

I find it very manageable to run 50+ miles/week with a full time job. how:

regular bedtime schedule. in bed by 10:30 and up by 6:00 a.m. every weekday.

    Don't have kids.

Run a 20 miler every weekend.

I know that advice isn't for everyone, but I love long runs year round whether I'm training for something or not -- so almost every saturday I fit in a run that is 17-22 miles long. Best day of the week man...

  16. I so badly want to do that Napa-SF Ragnar. But I need to make or join a team. It is such a huge gift you are giving, Kate. I think the world of the generosity you possess :) I hope all goes well with your eggs!

  17. Good to see you around again! I love positive posts like this one, thanks! Seems that you are doing what you love and it shows in your post. I’m training for some ultra nearly 99% of the time and sometimes find it difficult to fit in some other fun stuff. I’m up between 3:30 and 4:00 every day and that adds the extra hours I need. Unfortunately the extra hours usually goes into running or work.

  18. Hi Kate! I am so glad to hear that things are going well for you and Ang! I love your new kitty.

Yoga always seems to be the first thing I boot from my training. I just haven't found the right instructor so it is easier to go without it. Though, I really could use the practice.

  19. Welcome back!

Although it's not recommended by most marathon training programs, I've managed to do consistently well (almost all of my races lately have been PB’s) by running 3 key runs a week. Sometimes I manage to squeeze in more but life is hectic balancing a job, a family with 3 kids, yadda, yadda, yadda…
I make sure the 3 key runs are bad-ass though. And it leaves me more time to recover and to focus on the other important aspects of my life. Good luck. And again…welcome back.

  20. Thanks for your comment! So I think we might almost be twins.

I have tried Cinnamon Swirl and nearly died. It was love at first spoonful.

    We are both vegans. LOVE.

I wish I lived in Cali and could surf slash watch people surf all day. I tried it in Hawaii last year and am not the greatest but I'm cool with surf-watching! ha I am totally a wannabe.

My next race is still up in the air. I may be doing a few little races until the fall and then possibly a marathon. I'm still looking at dates because I really want to run the Men's Health Urbanathlon this year. There is one in Chicago, NYC, and San Fran. NYC dates go up next week so I will make my decision then! I would do all three if I lived in the US but I'm from Toronto!

But if I ever do make it to Cali you better prepare yourself. I will be stalking you and forcing you to go out and eat a vegan dinner with me. Then we can run. And maybe eat again.

And Goucher's book is spectacular. Read it!

    :)

  23. welcome back! sounds like you've been busy with some awesome stuff! i'm doing ragnar norcal, too (at least i think i have a team...). i'm super envious of your private ocean yoga...reminds me that i need to get back into my practice. as for balance, for me it's all about flexibility and finding what works for me - in my case, i keep my weekly mileage moderate and rest and relax when i feel i need it. can't wait to meet you in CHICAGO!!!
