Celebrate Good Times!

I will cut to the chase:  I finally had a successful long run!  I can thank Ang for that because she seems to be my good luck charm.  She has good juju.  During our last training cycle, I was the one that pulled us through our long runs but the tables have turned.

My last attempt at 16 miles ended with a recue from my good friend who so lovingly brought me a vegan muffin and water.  This time around, I made it.  I brought water and took short breaks along the way.  At one point we stopped for Gatorade and I ate a little something.   It was abnormally humid for San Diego so I was sweating like crazy despite the nice marine layer that hung around for the entirety of our run.  When we finished, I felt pretty good.  We ate Chipotle burrito bowls packed full of rice, black beans, guacamole and that amazing corn salsa.  Let me tell you, Chipotle provides a very satisfying post-long run meal.  I highly recommend it.

Angela’s 29th birthday is tomorrow, so we celebrated with friends on Saturday night.  We drank one pitcher after another of Mojitos and Sangria in our cabana at Lei Lounge.  The group reconvened at Bourbon Street to dance for hours.  I wound up barefoot, as usual, jumping around like a 10 year old hyped up on pixie sticks.  My feet hated me the next morning, but it was all worth it.

While the night was a blast, it reminds me why I don’t drink often.  It probably appears otherwise but we aren’t big drinkers.  We save alcohol for special occasions, like birthdays, PRIDE and random visits to LA.  Because of this, I can’t even function after a night of drinking.  I can hardly form complete sentences and I feel like a zombie.  It’s as though I lose a large sum of brain cells every single time I drink.  I usually spend my mornings reading but when I’m hungover, staring at a page full of words just gives me a massive headache.   I prefer to keep my system clean and free from all those toxins.   I think people wonder what kind of 25 year old I am.  I can answer that easily:  The healthy kind that spent way too much of her youth dancing on table tops.  I don’t regret those days but I have no desire to relive them.

So yesterday was a nice little detox and I am back on the health wagon.
[UPDATE: 9:20 PM - I just made Angela a vegan chocolate cake -- back on the health wagon after this cake is demolished.]

I'm curious; what is your favorite post run meal?
Chipotle or vegan Ramen noodle soup (the kind that costs 24 cents/pack)

Do you find that you can’t function after drinking, or is it just me?
Angela went to work on Sunday and gave an entire proposal to her boss on a lactate threshold testing program.  She is a rockstar.

  1. Love Chipotle after a wprkout. Or any time, especially living in a place that doesn't have a lot of veggie restaurant options. Even the Palm Desert Native Foods is closed for summer!

I'm with you about the booze. I can't drink too much cause it will trigger a migraine and then I'm really screwed.

  3. Chipotle after a long run makes sense- after most of my halves I pick up a Taco Bell burrito and some fro-yo on the way home.

As far as drinking, I have a really high tolerance, which sounds good but isn't. Expensive and dangerous, so I too only drink on special occasions and NEVER when upset.

  4. mexi food after a long workout is def a fave of mine, including chipotle! i feel the same way about drinking. once in a while i have a glass of wine or a beer, and on special occasions i'll have more. but i always feel terrible after! i think i got it all out of my system in college and i just don't like the way i feel afterward, so i usually avoid it. plus, during training, my body just doesn't want it.

  5. Well done with the long run! Happy Birthday to Angela! I eat almost anything but after really long and/or tough runs I crave some protein. I often make something with eggs and cheese then. I get the same cravings during heavy training.

  7. I don't really have an ultimate favourite food for after my runs! I will usually eat anything though. If it's a pretty long run, I will treat myself to something "bad" like pizza or a burrito or a big plate of pasta! We have a couple of Chipotle restaurants here now. I've tried it once before and really liked it :)

I don't drink...ever...so I can't answer your second question! I have always hated the taste of every type of alcohol in existence! Call me lucky...or boring...depending on how you see it :)

and no i am no longer a drinker either. its rare that i do for the same reasons you stated. of course i am considerably older than you and partied into my onset of 40. Now i wont really touch the stuff.

good job on the long run!

  9. Oh man, if I drink a lot the night before a planned run, there is a 2% chance I'll actually get out and go on that run. Hungover and running are two things I've learned the hard way that don't mix for me!

  10. No, I don't function well after a night of drinking at all. When I was teenager, I could drink all night, then be up and running around all day. Now, I can get a hangover from looking at pictures of alcohol. Lol.

  11. Hi there. I just found your blog and I wanted to say that you inspire me. :) I envy your courage to have picked up and moved to California, as that has always been a dream of mine. However, I waited too long and now I am married and have a son so I feel like my roots are planted here in Minneapolis where I work a corporate job and miss fresh produce during the bitter cold winters - so again, I envy you! Anyhow, I also share your love of running so reading about your running adventures is interesting to me. I also have a love of vegan food as well. So your blog is great and wanted to let you know.

p.s. hangovers ruin me as well ;) I drink on very few occasions. ;)

  12. I am also a new reader and echo what Kari said above. I find your blog very inspirational and respect the courage you had to make a big move like that (I am also a Chicago girl, currently being held hostage in TX):) Not to mention the courage to leave the corporate world...I hope I can find my true calling someday soon and make a similar change. So, THANK YOU!!

I agree completely about the drinking. I, too, have had my fair share of crazy table dancing-type nights, but as I get a little older, I feel far worse the next day, beyond the average hangover. Your description was dead on, I feel like I've lost way too many brain cells, and can barely focus my eyes, much less read, put together coherent sentences, or pitch a proposal to my boss :)
