My Impulse Buy: A Treadmill

Last night I clicked PURCHASE on a pretty pricey item; a NordicTrack treadmill.  Many of you call it the dreadmill -- but I am rather fond of this piece of equipment.  I love speed workouts and I love them even more on the treadmill.  I hate the gym and would much rather do these workouts in the privacy of my own home.

The best part is, there are no payments for 6 whole months.   That's where they sucked me in.  I admit it, I fall for all of the gimmicks and sales tactics.  I am a salesperson's dream customer.  I buy the newspaper from the boy at the door that says he will get a scholarship if he meets his quota.  I once bought make-up from a woman that walked into my office from the street, and yes, I made the check out to her.  It was probably stolen merchandise because I am pretty sure Victoria Jackson doesn't hire people to do door-to-door sales.  I fall for the Mary Kay people and I am guilted into buying candy for every kid's fundraiser.

There she is.  Isn't she a beauty?
NordicTrack C900

At least this time I bought something that will last for years and will make my (running) life simpler.  Can you tell I am trying to make myself feel better?  The other factor that brought on some guilt is that the average temperature in San Diego is 72 degrees.  Who needs a stinkin' treadmill in that kind of mild paradise?  Well, apparently I do.  I will love it and I will use it and I will make it worth every penny.

Any treadmill lovers out there?

Do you have your own?
Do you use it?  Was it worth it?

  2. Wow! Congrats on your new "baby" girlfriend! I actually don't mind the TM. For a long time it felt way easier than the road for me because I could just plug the number in a go (mentally easier for me). But now I am dreading returning to the treadmill but I know it will be my bff once winter comes and I'm training for Boston. Enjoy! And they should be putting you in that ad instead of the lady above.

  3. Not sure why, but this doesn't seem like a purchase that you would make. Like you say, being in So Cal where the weather is almost perfect year round it doesn't seem like you need a treadmill. But if you are going to use it for speed workouts consistently I guess I could see possibly buying one. But I just hope that you get enough use out of it.

Also, good luck on Chicago Marathon training. I was supposed to run that race too, but got injured, so I won't be able to. I'm finally starting to feel a bit better now though, I've been injured for like 3 months.

  5. Ah, admit it, it was Jillian that roped you in, wasn't it ;-)

I'm happy you're happy. I'm one of those who will never understand. I HATE the treadmill, and even though I live in a climate that could justify using one, I would rather (and do) drag myself out of bed before dawn to get in the mileage before it gets too hot. Even for speed work (when I was doing such things), my hubby and I would be out on the high school track by about 5 am.

(wow, just reading that made the treadmill sound so much more attractive)

Anyway, good luck and enjoy your new toy.

  6. I LOVE my treadmill. I have a Precor, and I bought it in 2006. It's awesome. I don't have a time limit on my runs, it's in my basement so it's nice and cool down there in the summer, and when I was recovering from surgery I was able to walk 12 miles on it while watching DVDs. It is the BEST, you are going to love it!!

  8. Yay, congrats! I love love love having my own TM. I got it last winter and it has been so great to have since having my baby. I also have a NordicTrack and I'm *almost* certain it is the C900. I enjoy the treadmill when I do speedwork on it - I have to mix up my pace and effort level on it otherwise I will get super bored. Plus I usually listen to music when I'm on it which is fun for me because when running outside I almost never wear headphones. So happy for you!!

  10. I do not like the treadmill. Not one bit. But it sure makes it convenient to have it right there, doesn't it? No payments for six months makes it even better. Now you will be toned, gorgeous and fit. Oh, yeah, you already are. Just remember if you hang clothes on it, take them off before you start running or else they might get stuck in the belt.

  11. Okay...so if you will use it soooo worth it to have the ability to run safely at any time of the day. I personally can't stand running on one and just sold mine. I just get too bored...but I know a lot of people that are fine on it in front a tv! Congrats on the purchase!

  12. I like running on a treadmill! It is definitely easier than running outside, even with incline. I don't know why. I also live in AL where it is *only* 94 today. I need the tm from about May-September. I also hate hate hate running in the cold. So there are like 2 months of weather I like to run in. Plus, I am much more likely to run at home than haul my cookies to the gym. It is a great investment if you use it, so don't worry about it : )

  13. I hate the mill. I do use it when it's lightning or heavy snow out. I have a NT brand too and it's a good treadmill. We(wife and I) have already paid for it and then some by the use we(more her) put on it. As long as I'm safe, I'm outside.

  14. AHHHHHHH I AM SO SO HAPPY FOR YOU!!!! I LOVE the treadmill too so I completely understand why you bought it. I am a sucker for everything too!!! I can't wait to read about how you like it!!

  15. Oh shes beautiful, congrats on the new addition to your fam. Personally I hate the treadmill, but I understand the appeal and turn to it when the temps are extreme here. Maybe if my life was in a different state then it is now I would get one, but I cannot imagine staying indoors running in my house when I could be outside with the sun hitting my skin and the wind blowing my hair.

  16. I would love to have my own treadmill. To be able to jog on it for a little in the morning or at night. I feel like it would really be useful. I love the treadmill. Love running outside too, but the convenience of a treadmill is unbeatable.

  17. Wow, that is a serious buy! Nice! Hope you get lots of fun and quality miles out of it. I've been running for 30 years now but I've never run on a treadmill.

  18. I actually do love the treadmill! I have a hard time doing speed work outdoors so the treadmill definitely forces me to do it! I don't have my own, so I have to go to the gym to use it. I don't mind though because it's only 5 minutes away :)

You will live it! Good buy!

  20. I'm super jealous! I love speed work on the TM! ANd, the convenience of having a TM at home?! Love love. I would gladly give up our dining table in place of an item I would use like a TM!

  21. I purchased one, but I hate it.. Not my particular treadmill, but any treadmill. Id much rather run outside, but I LOVE the convenience of having it and if I had to, Id purchase it all over again.

  22. I've got a treadmill that I don't use. It is a hand-me-down and not only is it old as far as the controls are concerned, the stupid thing is too LOUD. I'm not a 9-5 gal, and I once woke up my son when I used it at night. He was upstairs, I was downstairs.

Sweet piece like yours? oh, yea!
