A Little Perspective Never Hurts

Well, I have come to the conclusion that I will not be able to run the Chicago Marathon.  I am still flying all the way out there, staying in a hotel and cheering Angela on.  She is now running for the both of us.  Together we have raised over $1,500 for Voices for Children so my training didn't go completely to waste.

Reminder:  There is still time to donate (even $1) which will make you eligible to win a super cute Brooks T-Shirt of your choice.  Click here to donate.

I am completely down in the dumps about not being able to run Chicago. I wanted it so badly and had trained according to plan.  I didn't OVERtrain or UNDERtrain but still, here I am.  Tendinitis has gotten the best of me.

It is so easy to succumb to feelings of depression and loss when we are injured.  Sometimes it just takes a little image like this to bring us back to reality.  It helps to put things into perspective.

I don't think there is anything wrong with feeling upset and disappointed about an injury and having to drop out of a race in the final week.  The problem is when I start to feel sorry for myself.  I'm 25 years old.  I have a little tendinitis.  Otheriwse, I am healthy and well-fed.  I have an apartment and a warm bed to sleep in.  I have amazing friends and family and a job that pays my bills.  I have so much to be grateful for.  So much.

Rather than whine about my situation I should be doing something about others that are less fortunate.

What helps you to gain perspective when you start to feel sorry for yourself?

For me, working at an organization that helps foster children makes it pretty easy to put life into perspective when necessary.

  1. I saw your facebook post with this pic, Kate, and it literally took my breath away. I'm so sorry that you are unable to run the Chicago mary, but this post certainly reminds us all to step back and be thankful.

Your work must remind you daily. Wow.

  2. I think it is ok to feel disappointed. Acknowledge that it is how you are feeling, and then - like you said - remember how great things are otherwise. It is a balance.

When I am feeling sorry for myself (silly, as I'm beyond blessed) - I immediately think of my cousin and her husband and their 6 kids. Their 3rd child is who I started running for last year when I did my first Team in Training event. I think about how easy I have it, how lucky I am to be healthy, and to have healthy children, and I take a deep breath. Also, if I do something nice for someone (send a quick actual handwritten note) or call a friend to say hello, I always feel better. Somehow it gives me perspective and helps me get a grip, again.

Hang in there. I'm so sorry you're out for Chicago, but you are so smart to take care of yourself. Angela will love having you there for her! So proud of you both for your efforts in fundraising. What an awesome thing you've accomplished together!

  3. Sorry that you wont be able to run Chicago, I hope that you still have a good trip there with Angela.

You were the first person I was aware of who was trying to run Chicago back in February, bummer that both us us won't be making it this year. I hope you heal up and are back on the road soon.

  4. What an eloquent photo. When I'm feeling sorry for myself, or if I'm going through tough times, I do remind myself of those who have nothing, and who have many more troubles that I. I will always remember that picture now,as well.

Good luck to Angela. I'm sorry that you won't be able to run, it is frustrating after training so hard, but you've put it all into perspective.

  5. My heart is now broken, this is a downer for my day. I was so rooting for the dang tendonitis to just vanish in the middle of the night. But with all of the money you raised you have made a difference in the lives that need it with or without the race.

You are much smarter then I was when I had this issue before I ran Boston in 2008. Seriously you made the right choice here, I made the wrong choice and like I mentioned to you before still have issues with the injury from time to time.

Hope you and Angela are still up for a blogger meet up even if it may be slightly torturous.

  6. I agree.....I work for a childrens organization for families in CPS. That really helps keep things in perspective for me. Thanks for your post...we all need to be reminded!

  7. ahhhh so bummed to hear about chicago! but i commend you for your positive attitude. it's definitely ok to be disappointed, but you're right, perspective is key (often easier said than done, but true). thank you for reminding us : ) good for you for making this marathon more than just 26.2 miles, but rather a way to give back and spread awareness. keep your head up! looking forward to seeing you next weekend : )

  8. Ahhh, girl. So sorry. :( But you have such an amazing perspective here. You are wise and beautiful. Every time I find out how young you are, I feel so old! :) You seem so much wiser than most 25 year olds I know. I need to know you in real life! Hopefully one day we will meet.

  9. So sorry that this is how it turned out for you. But, you do have an amazing perspective on the grand scheme of things.
And I agree with Amanda - you seem wise beyond your age. Not just because of this post - I remember when I found out how old you were, I was shocked because of your experiences & the perspective that you have on life in general.

  10. Oh nuts. I'm so sorry to hear that you won't be able to run Chicago. I'll be on spectator duty myself though so maybe I'll see you out and about on the course!

When dealing with injuries I gain perspective by reminding myself that "this too shall pass."

  11. That is really a bummer :( Having perspective is so important when things get us down. It sounds like you are doing a great job balancing out the disappointment and frustration that is totally normal with the acknowledgement that life is pretty nice where you sit. Agreeing with the others...your maturity is beyond your years :) You will triumph over this injury and be stronger for having dealt with it :)

  12. OH GIRL!!! This made me tear up. I know exactly how you feel and it hurts so bad to have trained your little heart out and done everything right and still end up sidelined. You are such a good person to still go and cheer on everyone else. I think you are incredible and if you ever need to email vent.....I am your woman!

  13. I am so sorry :( I can't imagine what it must be like to have to sit this one out. You are awesome! and I think it's a part of running to know when you have to sit out. It's good advice for us newbies.

  14. It is OK to feel sorry for yourself, but I appreciate your positive outlook! It could be MUCH worse, and we can all be thankful for what we have. Sorry about your tendinitis. I had it before--injuries suck. But, you'll get better and be running again soon!

  15. About four years ago, I was diagnosed with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome.) It's not classified as a disease or disorder but oh boy does it feel like one! The pain is sometimes too much for me to bear. But I try to think all the time about kids who have Crohn's, Colitis, cancers and other diseases. I try to remember that I can work, I can walk, I can function, I can RUN when I want to. It's so easy for us to feel sorry for ourselves sometimes, because it does suck when we are in these predicaments! But like you said, "Rather than whine about my situation I should be doing something about others that are less fortunate." Amen, sister.

  16. Awwwwwww you poor thing! I am so on your bandwagon. I totally remember how shitty it felt to realize that I couldn't do something I REALLY wanted to do. Tell me you didn't actually run it! I'm worried :)
    Thinking of you!!!
