Instead of pretending to be a hidden jew this time, we hung out with all of our neighbors all night. Everyone came together outside on the patio and brought wine, beer and food to grill. We sat there until almost midnight drinking wine and laughing at our landlord's hysterical stories. I live so closely to all of these people yet I hardly knew anything about them. I had no idea that one of our neighbors is from Puerto Rico or that my landlord has lived all over the world. I discovered that my closest neighbor works for a wine distributor, something I should've learned a long time ago! He brought out bottle after bottle of fine wine. It was a fabulous impromptu celebration.
At one point I received a text message saying work was cancelled for Friday and I jumped out of my chair with joy, only to have the power return an hour later and a text retracting that statement.
Everyone was so relaxed and jovial. We all had such a nice time together. It's sad that we need an excuse to sit outside and talk for hours on end. Normally everyone is wrapped up in the TV or computer or I'm busy on my treadmill. We never take the time to sit around and chat with our neighbors. It was like a flashback to the 1950's.
I'm sure the power outage caused a lot of problems for people, but for me, it was a nice chance to relax and enjoy my neighbors beneath a sky of bright stars.
