A Trip to the Sequoias

On Thursday night, my friend, Megan, and I drove six hours to the Sequoia National Forest to meet up with friends for a weekend trip.  We arrived at almost 4:00 in the morning after some possible sleep deprivation related hallucinations.  I should have taken some pictures of our driving adventures but as usual, I fail as a blogger.  We managed to talk the entire time and didn't even turn the music on.  I can only imagine how different our car ride would have been if we were men.  We even managed to talk for an hour in bed before finally going to sleep at 5am.  Oh, women.

Megan and Me at the top of Moro Rock.  Great views!

We wasted our first day catching up on sleep, and spent the following day hiking in the beautiful Sequoias.  The trees are enormous.  Obviously.  But I can't even begin to explain it.  We were all in awe of the vastness of the forest and the sheer size of the trees.  The rest of the group had multiple bear sightings, but we managed to not be present on those occasions.  Bummer.  I was really looking forward to seeing a baby bear.

Shyle, her mom, me, and Megan.

The baby bear I did not see.

Megan and I did a "power hike" followed by standing push-ups, dips, squats, etc. while we waited for the rest of the crew to come along.  I love having a friend that is willing to do foolish things in front of crowds of tourists in the parking lot.

It was such a nice trip spent with great friends and a bit sad at the same time.  Our friend, Shyle, is moving all the way back to Michigan in just 2 weeks!  We spent the evenings making dinner, drinking wine, and then relaxing on the couch.  We killed time researching serial killers for fun, and one night we got lucky enough to catch some Sex & The City reruns on TV.  Score!

I didn't get any running in this weekend, which is stressing me out because I have this marathon coming up very soon and I have hardly any time to train for it.  I got in many miles, but not running.  On Sunday, I got back too late to do a serious run so I just knocked out 6 miles on the treadmill before bed. I feel really lame right now.  Weekend getaways are great, and I do them very often, but if I'm not with Ang, I find it hard to get a run in.  I know--  excuses, excuses.  Next time, I won't let that happen.  I plan on doing an 18 miler this Saturday and I am crossing my fingers this darn heat calms down.  When will this madness end!?

After a total of 12 hours in the car this weekend, I am home and back to reality.  I am laying in bed with Holly, my dog, who just got spayed and is in a lot of pain.  I feel like I can't leave her side because she is too fragile.  When I try to pick her up, she squeals in pain and it's killing me!  I just want my little fur baby to feel better.

Have you ever signed up for a marathon at the last minute?

This is my first time signing up for a marathon with less than 2 months to train.

Are you a fan of road trips?

I love road trips!  I love picking out snacks for the road and making playlists.  It's great quality time for you and whoever you're with.

  1. My one and only was decided about 8 weeks before I ran it. I had a nice steady base to build from, but I had never run more than 14 miles at one time and somehow pulled it out of my arse.

  2. I just signed up for a marathon that is at the end of October. I always seem to get injured/ burnt-out at about week 10 or training so I am hoping that a shorter schedule will have me peaking at the right time and not hobbling over the finish line.
Aww poor puppy- getting spayed is no fun! When we go our bichon de-sexed she would lay around with the most sad, pathetic look on her face and I spent a few days being very unpopular.

    1. I kind of agree with you on the shorter schedule. I tend to sign up WAY in advance and end up injured about 2 months out from race day.

Poor Bichon! They're just so helpless.

  3. What a fun weekend! I'd be so scared to see bears... yikes! I've never signed up for a last minute marathon, but I have run a last minute half... as in I changed from 5k to half the day before! So fun though. Love road trips, especially along the CA coast :)

    1. The CA coast is definitely the best when it comes to road trips!

Last minute races can be fun, huh? Especially when you decide the NIGHT BEFORE, like you! That means no time for nerves or stress.

  4. Looked so beautiful and like a great time! You're going to be fine w/ your mileage--small tradeoffs for great life experiences.

And btw--I need a book recommendation. Any come to mind?

  5. Your vet might give you something to give her something for the pain, if she's still sore. I know it's harder on the females.
