Santa Barbara Marathon, Anyone? And Boston!

I mentioned last week that I will not be running Long Beach anymore since Ang has school that weekend and it wouldn't be the same without her.  And #2, because I decided I hate marathon training in this hot weather.  Well, I realized that she's going to be in school for 4 years getting this doctorate thing and will be at school many-a-weekend, so I better get used to it.  If I'm going to run a marathon, I should plan on her not being there.  I'm still considering running the half, thanks to Striding Mom's brilliant suggestion to do so.  Why didn't I think of that?

SANTA BARBARA INTERNATIONAL MARATHON

I would still like to run a full marathon in 2012 since Boston was a bust -- damn tendinitis!  That said, time is running out!  I recently visited Santa Barbara and posted about it here.  I love that city SO so much and would love an excuse to go back up there.  Santa Barbara International Marathon: November 10, 2012.  Anybody?  I am strongly considering it.  Training wouldn't be difficult as I still have a good 13 mile long run base.   It would be easy to build up to a couple 20 milers in time for November.  Right?  Let's weigh the pros and cons.

The CONs:

  1. Again, Angela would not be able to accompany me and she is my biggest support person.
  2. The race is on a Saturday so I'd have to take time off of work to drive up on Friday.  Good-bye, precious PTO.
  3. If friends came along, they'd have to take off Friday as well (see #2) and I would hate for anyone to give up vacation time for MY silly marathon.
  4. The heat doesn't seem to be going anywhere, so I may have to face those hot, miserable long runs that I just ditched Long Beach for.

And the PROs:

  1. Another trip to gorgeous Santa Barbara. Enough said.
  2. A beautiful point-to-point course to run.  No back and forths or zigs and zags like Surf City!
  3. A smaller race, which usually means a lot less of a hassle.
  4. One of the last chances to run a marathon in 2012.
  5. Driving distance!  No flights needed.
  6. Did I mention I love SB?
It appears there are more pros than cons.  Hmmm... I am going to sleep on this one.

Any advice?  Should I run SB?  Do you know anyone running it?

I've been having so many good runs lately and it makes me anxious to train for something again.  This Saturday, I had an excellent 13 miler before a friend's birthday party.  That always makes the party more fun because I don't feel guilty about eating tortilla chips and drinking margaritas.  I mean, I just ran 13 miles!

I just ran for almost 2 hours, gimme another margarita!
Do you feel like you can indulge a bit after a long run?  After 20 milers I like to have a big peanut-butter & chocolate cupcake from Lotus Cafe.  All vegan, all delicious!

On Sunday, my friend and I went out for lunch and coffee in Little Italy and then hit up Blick art supply store.  I am trying to do some DIY art for our home which should be a bargain, right?  Well, I spent nearly $100 on stuff for 3 pieces of DIY wall art.  It better be good or I will be kicking myself for not buying someone else's better artwork.  Are you a DIYer?  Thanks to Pinterest, I will be giving it a shot!  (Photos to follow).

BOSTON

Who's in for Boston 2013?  I'm going for it!  It is so expensive and can be such a hassle, BUT I planned ahead and bought this incredible KGB Deal for airfare and hotel to Boston for only $99!  How amazing is that?  If that all works out (as it should), this trip will cost me hardly anything.  If you're on the fence about it, I say go for it!  You won't regret it.  :)

This post sure was all over the place.  I think it's time for a run!  The sun has set, the heat has passed, and I shall go...

Happy Monday!

  1. Okay so this is literally what I posted about today - I am so on the fence about Boston. It's SOOOOO expensive. How in the world did you score that deal on airfare? I am struggling between crossing something off my bucket list and forking out the cash and hassle to run the event....

    1. I feel like a lot of people are on the fence about it, and I completely understand why. It's costly! But that moment you cross the finish line of a historic race is priceless, right? Okay, I will admit, I am being kind of selfish. I want everyone in the blogging world to go to Boston so we can all meet and have the time of our lives. And you're a mom which I am sure makes it 10x more difficult. But, if you need someone to try to sway you, I'm your girl! :)

  4. I think you should the SBIM - it sounds too good to miss! I have run marathons without having many supporters (and certainly without having my husband there) and it's fine - not as good! but fine - and you kind of have to just have a talk with yourself about how you're going to handle it when the going gets tough and the self pity might hit. It works and there is something great about entirely pleasing yourself on getting there, pre race stuff and post race stuff. Different, but fine!

Aaargh so wish I'd BQed this year! I'm going to try next year for 2014!

PS I've moved blogs - come find me at http://petraruns.wordpress.com

  5. Well, I see Ang's schedule just freed up. And to think, I was just about to buy some airline tickets to come join you! I have more PTO than I know what to do with. haha

I've never been a DIYer, but last week I signed up for a canvas painting class next Saturday. It's $30 and they supply all the materials. I haven't painted anything since fingerpainting when I was like 4, but I figure for $30 if I totally suck it's no big loss. I'll give it to my mom and let her hang it on her refrigerator. LOL

  6. Oh man! I wish you would buy a plane ticket! How fun would that be? Do it, do it! You know you want to... :)

I have always wanted to take one of those classes. Is one where you get to drink wine too? Those sound awesome.
