Marathon Mantra

So, Mayor Bloomberg changed his mind.  The NYCM has been called off.  Good grief!  Don't get me wrong, I totally understand indecision.  It takes me hours to decide what to eat for dinner, so I certainly do not envy his position.  Talk about pressure!  But what was anyone thinking when they decided the race would go on?  The race should have been called off three days ago.  But now loads of people have flown into the city to run, and instead, they find out the race is actually not taking place.  What a mess.  Personally, I would have felt pretty guilty taking water from a volunteer on the course knowing there are far more deserving people out there who need true assistance.

Since so many people will not be running their marathon this weekend, I feel kind of strange writing about my marathon next week.  I don't want to add any salt to your wounds.  However, Santa Barbara is only 7 days away and it would make a great replacement race!  If you're missing the NYCM, you should probably just join me in beautiful Santa Barbara!

One of my MARATHON MANTRAs next Saturday will be:

And I am all about change.

I will continue to share my MARATHON MANTRAS with all of you as race day nears.  I am a huge fan of self talk during races.  Repeating mantras truly helps me to keep going when I so badly want to quit.

Do you use mantras?
Tell me your favorite!

  1. My favorite so far (I'm always finding new ones!) is simply "Push It!"

  2. I'm not a big mantra fan, but I do repeatedly tell myself the faster I run, the faster I'm finished :) I'm so deep!

    1. I tell myself that often! The faster I go, the sooner I get to eat. That's always good motivation for me.

  3. I think I NEED more mantras. One I use going up hills - not so nice but it works for me - is "This hill is my bitch"...

    1. Hahaha! I will need that at mile 22 when there is a long ass hill that may kill me.

  4. I don't have a mantra, but what works for me is to just be grateful for every step I am able to take. I don't have to run uphills, I get to do it. Many years ago, I treated myself like a drill sargeant, now I find I can motivate myself much more by being grateful and happy about everything I can do :-)

  5. I run through a few in my mind. I often just repeat "change your mind. Change your mind" To me when I am in pain instead of running away I change my mind and learn to accept it and even learn to like it and it is all just changing my mind. Choosing to see from a different perspective.

Suck it up buttercup is also a good one :)
"you've got more than you think you do"

  8. I like "embrace the uncomfortable." It is a good reminder to me that a race is not supposed to feel easy. All the best for your upcoming race Kate.

  9. what a great mantra!! I find most of mine are very short or often have to do with a specific race and my goal

hilarious "Good grief! Don't get me wrong, I totally understand indecision. It takes me hours to decide what to eat for dinner,"
