I have also connected with Kristen from Happy Running Mama who lives in Portland. If you don't read her blog, you definitely should. It's good for the soul! She is insightful and her writing is honest and refreshing. She also includes gorgeous photos of her children who are too cute to handle. She is a kindred spirit of mine and her posts always resonate with me. It's truly uncanny how much our lives parallel one another. We had big plans to trail run and eat delicious vegetarian food when I was supposed to visit Portland this past December. Sadly, my trip was canceled and we didn't have the chance to meet. We will finally be meeting in Boston this April for the marathon. Our first time running together will be 26.2 miles!

My new plan of attack is to take it easy in Boston. I want to have fun with it. I plan to enjoy the crowds and smile the entire way. Okay, maybe not the whole way (note: Heartbreak Hill) but I want it to be enjoyable. Boston will not be about a PR or pushing myself to the limit. It is going to be all about the experience.
| Newport is a small race. Right up my alley! |
Newport is where it's at. I have plans to do really well in Newport, and I think Kristen and I are on the same page with our goals. If we are going to make it to June 1st injury-free, we need to be extremely careful in the next few months. That means icing, foam rolling, stretching, resting whenever necessary, and listening to our bodies.

Ummm, of course this is quite possibly my favorite blog post ever written since it is about YOU coming to visit ME and us kicking some serious ASS in NEWPORT! What is there not to LOVE about that?!
ReplyDeleteSeriously, Kate, I am beyond excited that you are so adventurous and were immediately all-in when I proposed this crazy idea. I have all kinds of fun things planned for your visit to Portland. And, in the meantime, I can't wait to meet you for real in Boston for that historic race!
Oh, and before I forget, I wanted to answer your questions -- YES, I have officially made friends (you!) through blogging and, NO, I have never run back-to-back marathons. But am looking forward to it this spring.
Now I am off to check out Trisha's blog. :) xoxo
This is definitely going to be an adventure! I have really high hopes for us in Newport. I had such a great run tonight, and I think it is in part due to the fact that there is so much excitement surrounding both Boston and Newport. I don't usually feel quite this excited about my training runs. I am thinking we can pull off a 3:23 in Newport. What do you think? :)
DeleteAnd the only downside to this is that I so wish you could join me on my long runs (or vice versa). Our paces are so compatible, it seems unfair that we can't run together now! I'm pouting.
DeleteThe 3:23 sounds like the perfect challenge. Not easy by any means but not out of reach. I can't believe the speedy mile repeats you ran today!
DeleteI've been fortunate enough to meet a few bloggers, and it has always been the BEST TIME! The UNfortunate part is that the ones I've met have all been out-of-state and we don't have the opportunity to hang out and become as good of friends as I know we would be if we lived in the same city.
ReplyDeleteI know! It would be so great to have some of these amazing people (including YOU) to actually train with. I think about that often.
DeleteThat sounds like so much fun!!! And I 100% agree about Kristen's blog...it's fantastic! As is yours :) I've only met one blogger in real life and it was very brief, post race. And Miss Zippy and I were soooo close to meeting at CIM, but kept missing eachother! I have really appreciated the kind support from other bloggers and am so grateful to have found this awesome community of runners :) As for back-to-back marathons, I have not... yet! My goal is to qualify for Boston, then run the Boston to Big Sur Challenge! I believe the Big Sur Marathon is 10 or so days after Boston.
ReplyDeleteThe Boston to Big Sure challenge sounds so cool! I've considered it because Big Sure is on my marathon bucket list.
DeleteI hope to meet Miss Zippy one day!
I've made a few friends by blogging - but haven't met too many. I did see one of my friends at the grocery store and we were both staring at each other thinking - hmmm, where do I know that person from :-D
ReplyDeleteHAHA!! That is too funny!
DeleteHow exciting! Newport marathon looks gorgeous! I have made incredible friends through blogging. Some of my best friends are bloggers. I can't imagine not having some of them in my life. So incredible that you get to share the marathon experience with one of your buddies!
ReplyDeleteThat is so great, Lisa!
DeleteI agree. It is really great to have a marathon experience with a friend.
I'm from Seattle and I LOVE Newport OR, the whole coast is amazing. The best thing in Newport is the Rogue brewery (Juniper Ale... yum). I just found out about the Newport Marathon yesterday, after I found an old Runner's World behind my desk :) Such a small world. Have fun !!!
ReplyDeleteI wish I knew who you were "Unknown." Thanks for the recommendation on the brewery! Yes, it's a very small world :)
DeleteI have run back to back marathons last spring (4 weeks apart)-- I feel that four weeks was too close for me personally, but I think seven should be great, especially if you are not "racing" Boston.
ReplyDeleteI haven't met any bloggers yet, but I hope to someday!
4 weeks is really close. I don't know how some people do several marathons a month!
DeleteI have so many bloggers that I think of as friends, but I've only met a couple. I really need to change that!
ReplyDeleteI think it's a good idea to enjoy Boston. Then you can kick ass in Newport. Plus, seven weeks apart is pretty good. You can take some time to recover, then get your edge back.
I once did seven marathons in nine months. I just couldn't say no to St. George, Paris, San Francisco, Honolulu, San Diego (now Carlsbad), Los Angeles, and Rock & Roll SD. My plan was to alternate, run one race hard, the next as more of a training run. I think I ended up running all of them between 3:40 & 3:50. I wouldn't recommend it, but it sure was fun at the time!
Debbie! That is insanity -- I love it! Paris is definitely on my bucket list. I love that city and think it would be incredible to run 26.2 miles there.
ReplyDeleteYou guys are going to have a blast!! You HAVE to go to Blossoming Lotus, a vegan restaurant. I just drooled on my computer thinking about it. Sorry I will miss you two in Portland, would have loved to join you :) ~Leigh
ReplyDeleteAww, Leigh, where will you be? It would be so great if you could meet up with us at one point or another.
DeleteBlossoming Lotus is less than a mile from my house...one of my favorite places! We'll add it to the list! :)
DeleteBack in the pre-injury days I loved doing marathons closer together, and the 2nd race was always faster. I typically like them closer together, though, so you don't have to squeeze any more long runs in. I'm lazy. Three or four weeks is about right for me. Six or seven weeks means you have to work in a 20 miler or two. Yuck.
ReplyDeleteThe closest together I've done is 6 days apart, but that was because I had really bad weather for the first one and just wasn't happy with it.
So glad to hear the second race was always faster! Yipee!
DeleteThe good thing about 6-7 weeks is that I can take some much needed rest and then just get right back into it and then taper again.
I'm about to do my first ever marathon...so no, I haven't and won't this year. I have done back to back 5Ks. LOL!
ReplyDeleteI haven't met anyone on the blog yet. I plan to meet Petra for the Yorkshire Marathon in October and another blogger in Luxembourg as soon as I get to England (and possibly the Paris or London Marathon next year with her). I am looking to meet other runners out there!
I'm so jealous that you get to meet Petra! She is wonderful! Paris is definitely on my bucket list.
DeleteWhat an awesome time you're going to have in OR! And I like your plan for Boston--that's a race that really is an experience race and you'll get to soak it all in. You will love it. I think 7 weeks should work out well for you. A couple of weeks uber easy to recover, then a little ramp up again, then back to taper.
ReplyDeleteI have met tons of bloggers now and I am almost always pleasantly surprised, I'm happy to say!
I can't believe I still haven't met you! Yours is one of the first blogs I started reading. So sad I missed you in Boston last year.
DeleteKate I ran back to back Marathons a week apart last October raising money for Breast Cancer. I ran The Portland Marathon (Ran a PR 3:23) then went to Hartford CT ran in the ING Hartford Marathon 3:31.. was such a great experience from West Coast one weekend to the East Coast the following weekend. I know its not recommended but was doing it for the cause!! Best of luck in both races! I will be cheering for you in Boston as a spectator this year!! Keep training hard!!
