Mile Repeats + True Food Kitchen

First things first!  I finally got an iPhone AND created a FACEBOOK page.  This is a big week in technology for SoCal Runner Gal!  CLICK HERE and like SCRG on Facebook.

I had an eight mile run on the agenda last night with 4x1600s.  I was a bit apprehensive because I was tired and felt sluggish from lack of sleep and a semi-stressful day at work.   I thought I might feel terrible after the first mile and throw in the towel.  I reluctantly hopped on the treadmill, set it to the usual 1% incline and took off.

I actually felt great!  I ran my mile repeats at 6:40, 6:40, 6:36, and 6:34.  That may not seem very speedy to some, but considering I'm coming back from an injury, I'll take it!  The pace never felt too fast or too hard.  It was just hard enough.  My legs were dripping in sweat when I finished and I felt great.  It was like a much needed cleanse after a not-so-great day.  Sometimes all you need is a good sweat.

Tonight, I plan to do a very easy 8 mile run and take Holly along for a few of those miles.  I live in Golden Hill, a neighborhood with a lot of hills.  Shocking, I know.  I really need to start utilizing them to my advantage considering Boston is just 2 1/2 months away.  Tonight, I shall do that.

I went to lunch on Tuesday at True Food Kitchen.  It is Andrew Weil's restaurant and I've been dying to try it!  The food was excellent and the space is beautiful.

I had a tomato, avocado and tempeh sandwich with veganaise (the TLT).  It tasted just like I remember a BLT to  taste, but better.  I enjoyed a side of sweet potato hash and tried a slice of my friend's kale pizza.  Everything was delicious.  The pizza was covered in kale and garlic, which I loved.  I highly recommend this place if you're in the area and don't mind being in Fashion Valley.  It's not my favorite place, but it's worth it for the food and the ambiance of this place.  There are several other locations, as well.  I know there is a restaurant in Santa Monica and Newport Beach, as well as Denver.

What is your favorite soul-cleansing workout?

  1. Awesome workout- and YES, those mile repeats were fast indeed! The food pics made me hungry, looks delicious :-) Good luck with your 8 miler!

  2. You always have the BEST food pictures. And your mile repeats are awesome! I dream of seeing a 6 before my miles one day soon. I love running hills, I really do, but I hate running hill repeats. It takes the stride out of my run, so I just look forward to embracing them on my runs. I hope I have done enough hills for the ATX marathon in 2 weeks, which I hear is a hilly course.

    1. 2 weeks! That is so soon. How is taper going??

    2. Well, it was going great, until today I pushed the mileage AND the pace of my long run to 15.5 miles very close to goal pace. Mentally confidence boosting, but not great on letting the legs taper...

  3. Those are great mile repeat times, especially if you feel that it was a great workout. Self-perception is the key not the actual time.

On another light-hearted note, your hair color is beautiful!

    1. Thank you, Erin! And you are definitely right -- it's all about perception!

  4. 4 X 1600 is not a fun or easy workout, you crushed it! Nice work! True Food Kitchen looks amazing! I must take my Mom there for lunch, I am closest to the SM location, and, hello, you are drop dead gorgeous! Are there any other SoCal or West Coast bloggers running Boston? We should do a met up. Have a wonderful week.

  6. Awesome job Kate! Um, I haven't run any faster than MAYBE a 6:53 pace all training cycle (not including strides) so I'd say these miles would definitely be giving me a major cleanse and high! I'm not sure why my coach hasn't had me doing anything like this...I should ask him. But in the meantime I'm not too worried...just happy for you and hoping that it only goes up up up from here as you prepare for Boston. And your food looks so yummy! I bet you would LOVE Asheville, NC so so much. It isn't like anything I expected until I got there. So many of the restaurants are vegetarian and vegan...farm to table type places. Definitely some good places that I thought were delicious!

  9. There are people who don't think 6:40, 6:40, 6:36, and 6:34 are speedy times?
    They are crazy. Great job!

  11. Very good and that place looks fabulous. What is tempeh?

  12. Ah! I just went to True Food in Santa Monica yesterday and it was soooo good. I had the Winter Ingredient Salad. SO good. Tempeh on a BLT is the bomb. Real Food Daily (there are two in the LA area, not sure if they have any in San Diego) had the BEST BLT wrap w/ bacon tempeh.

  14. Great job on those mile repeats. And are you just LOVING your iPhone yet? It took me about a month to get over missing my Droid but now I'm a total convert. Favorite soul cleansing workout would be a 3-mile hilly trail loop done a few times over. It's my favorite place.
